Witness Center Organizes Symposium on the Role of Media in Promoting Civil Peace in Nablus and the Camps

Today, Saturday, the Witness Center organized a symposium as part of the “From the Camp” platform project, focusing on the role of media in promoting civil peace in Nablus Governorate in general and the camps in particular. The symposium was attended by the Governor of Nablus, the Chamber of Commerce, the municipality, the Journalists’ Syndicate, and camps committees officials.

Kaied Ma’ari, Director of the Witness Center, explained that the symposium was held against the backdrop of the recent events in Balata Camp and other camps, and how the media is handling these events and its role in promoting civil peace in the camps. He pointed out that the Witness Center will organize a workshop bringing together all Nablus institutions to develop an action plan to improve the camps.

For his part, Ghassan Daghlas, Governor of Nablus, stressed the necessity of unity and cohesion among institutions in the camps to improve living conditions and focus on individuals, especially given the spotlight on cultural centers and clubs in the camps. He emphasized the need to change the negative image of camp refugees in light of the difficult conditions they live in due to the lack of many basic services required for a dignified life.

The participants in the workshop recommended that Nablus Governorate, the Chamber of Commerce, the municipality, and all relevant authorities fully assume their responsibilities towards the camps. They also emphasized the need to enhance the role of media in conveying the bright side of the camps, creating initiatives for collective work in the camps to promote cooperation and belonging, launching projects and investments in the camps, and activating arbitration committees to reduce conflicts that result in killings.
