Brainstorming Session: Media Coverage of Gender-Based Violence Cases.

Witness Center “Shahid” held a brainstorming session on “media coverage of cases of gender-based violence”, on Monday, July 25, 2022, under the “Women Leads” Initiative within the Naseej regional project and co-funded by Oxfam and the European Union, with the participation of a number of media organizations and feminism activists. The session discussed the relationship of gender and media, the mechanism of media coverage of gender-based violence issues, how to deal with cases of violence whose stories reach media institutions, how media professionals cover content related to gender-based violence, including humanitarian stories, and to carry out coverage in line with the necessary ethical principles and safety. At the end of the session, some recommendations were made, such as the preparation of a policy paper with certain criteria, including how to cover cases of gender-based violence in the media, building the capacities of media professionals in covering gender-based violence topics and conducting awareness campaigns specifically targeting young people about gender and gender-based violence.
